Netscape Finally Throws in the Towel
Netscape Navigator shuffles off its virtual coil. I bet most people are scratching their heads at this story wondering, "Netscape was still around?" Many obits will mention Microsoft's decision to kill Netscape with the antitrust decision to bundle its (at the time) crappy version of a browser with Windows 95. Less be will said, however, about these real self-immolating decisions, like selling itself to AOL, and allowing an open-source group named Mozilla run with the original code and create Firefox, effectively taking away all remaining marketshare.
If you've seen Netscape 9 lately, you'd realize it was nothing more than Firefox with a branded skin around it. Not a very satisfying end to the browser that opened the internet to the rest of the world.

so what does this about open source?
by the way. i think my mac hard drive just died.
seriously. it was making this horrible noise earlier and i had to shut it down and reboot from my back up drive. and the hard drive continued screeching and then it just stopped.
how ominous that this happened during my visits to the dudebros' blogs.
do you have mac-killing vibes on your blog, Pet? tell the truth.
Otta - So, if your Mac is like any other Apple product, does that mean you have to throw it away and by a whole new one? Does the case even allow you to open it up without an apple-certified "genius" looking over your shoulder?
Notwithstanding the bad aura of ADS (Apple Derangement Syndrome) surrounding my blog, I think it has hard-drive-killing-fu. A week after blogging about my efforts with linux, my hard drive failed.
As for Firefox and an open-source browser, I think Mozilla has done very well with entering into partnerships that allow it to make money even as it maintains its open-source cred. The other open-source browser out there, Opera, has gained almost no traction in the browser wars, even after all these years. Netscape, as a company, made some astoundingly poor choices, and its poor browser paid the consequences. There's a lesson in there.
does that mean you have to throw it away and by a whole new one?
it probably would. except i have insurance. so i just have to make a claim based on the last time i dropped it.
you can open it without an apple certified genius, but then you're on your own for the rest of your life. that does kind of suck. but, i'm sorry. the ease of use makes up for it. yes, i know. a mac is "computer for dummies." i don't care. olive my mac.
you talk about open source like your brother talks about quantum physics.
you boys make a silly girl's head spin, i swear!
how about a dusty old poetry post, Pet?
Otta - hate to disappoint, but the new year is shaping up to be even busier than the last 3 months of last year. Is that even possible? Oh yes. Never underestimate the power of of the corporate maxim: "No good result goes unpunished." After my performance review in December (which resulted in a raise almost double in percentage what anybody else in the company got), the word came down from the CEO that if I could do that much damage in 3 months, I should be able to have that kind of output all year long.
Meh. I'll definitely have a post on Valentine's Day. But scansion on my old Renaissance pals? I'd love to visit with my old friends...
Hi, Pet.
Are you getting bunches more money for this prodigious output?!
Tell the CEO you need more minions and a corner office.
